Oncology Company Loses Bid for Michigan Tax Break on Lab Tools

A company that finds patients for drug trials isn’t eligible for a tax exemption for materials used in industrial processing because it doesn’t run the trials, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled.

Strata Oncology Inc.'s activity doesn’t result in the discovery or modification of pharmaceuticals, or necessary for the drugs to receive government approval, the court ruled Thursday in an unsigned opinion. As a result, the company is on the hook for nearly $250,000 in use taxes for 2015-2018.
