Opportunity Zone Extension, Transparency Bill Revived in House

A bipartisan group of House lawmakers reintroduced a bill aimed at extending the investment and deferral window for opportunity zones through the end of 2028, while adding new reporting requirements.

The 2017 GOP tax law established opportunity zones and allowed preferential capital gains tax treatment for people who invest in these federally recognized economically distressed communities. The existing program is set to expire in 2026, and the new bill’s proposed transparency requirements were ultimately stripped from the 2017 legislation.
