IRS Plans Tax Form Changes for Alimony Deductions

The IRS plans to make changes to its tax return forms after the agency’s watchdog flagged potential issues for taxpayers trying to determine their eligibility to deduct alimony payments.

The 2017 tax law eliminated the deduction for alimony payments for divorces finalized starting in 2019. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, in a report released April 22, found an additional line is needed on Form 1040 to enter the date of divorce or separation agreements on the form’s Schedule 1.
