SALT Expansion Talks to Wait Until Expiration, Malliotakis Says

Negotiations in Congress to expand the state and local tax deduction likely won’t happen until the boosted tax break expires through 2029, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) said Thursday.

The state and local tax deduction cap—a key issue for high-tax states like New York, New Jersey, and California—was raised to $40,000 for five years as part of the expansive 2025 tax-and-spending law. Malliotakis, a member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, was among those who pushed to expand the break.
