Senate Democrat Presses IRS on Money Lost in Document Destruction

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is the latest lawmaker to demand answers from the IRS on whether taxpayers were harmed by the destruction of 30 million unprocessed 2019 paper information tax documents, joining Republican colleagues pressuring the agency.

Brown wrote in a Monday letter to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel that some Ohio taxpayers couldn’t claim the Earned Income Tax Credit. Destruction of the unprocessed forms was first reported in a September 2021 Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration report.
