Many retirees wouldn’t pay income tax on their Social Security benefits under a new proposal from two GOP senators.
Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) turned President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign promise into legislation that would free many middle-class retirees from tax on the benefits. It raises the income threshold by roughly a third for single filers and more than doubles it for married couples.
About 40% of recipients are on the hook for federal income taxes on benefits, the Social Security Administration said.
