Sports Gambling Causes NY Tax Boom. Cries for Help Rise, Too

New York collected twice as much from online sports gambling taxes than projected last year and revenue continues to grow — along with telephone calls to the state’s gambling problem hot-line.

The state brought in about $730 million from mobile sports gambling taxes in the fiscal year that ended March 31, double the $357 million projection, Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said Wednesday. The larger haul was primarily due to a greater number of licenses issued to gaming companies and a higher tax rate than initial estimates, he said.
