Sweden to Block EU Tobacco Tax Plan Due to Nicotine Rates (1)

The EU’s proposal to revise the way the bloc taxes cigarettes and tobacco-related products is in jeopardy as Sweden said it will vote against the bill in its current form, according to people familiar with the matter.

The rejection risks defeating the bill since EU tax legislation requires unanimity among its 27 members for approval. A government spokesperson confirmed that Sweden doesn’t support the proposal.

The bill, proposed last year, more than doubles the excise rates on cigarettes across the bloc and adds new minimum taxes to a host of new tobacco-related products like e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches.
