Taiwan Trade Bill Clears Senate, Heads to Biden’s Desk

Senators cleared an initial trade agreement with Taiwan on Tuesday evening, sending legislation that approves an agreement negotiated by the Biden administration and Taipei to the president’s desk.

The legislation includes transparency and cooperation guidelines for future agreements negotiated under the initiative, and could lay the groundwork for stronger tax ties with the island. The bill easily passed the GOP-led House but was blocked earlier this month in the Senate.

On Tuesday, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Finance ranking member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) celebrated the bipartisan legislation that now heads to President Joe Biden for a signature.
