National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins is furthering her push for the IRS to promptly implement scanning technology for paper-filed tax returns, appealing to IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig the decision from deputy commissioners to partially modify and partially revoke her directive on the topic.
Collins in March directed the IRS to deploy technology to automate processing of paper-filed, software-prepared returns by next year’s filing season. She also directed the IRS to implement technology to automate processing of paper-filed, handwritten returns by the 2023 or 2024 filing seasons.
