A lawsuit brought by a Texas mayor Thursday accused Travis County officials of improperly enacting a tax hike that overcharges by about $22 million following fatal flooding on July 4.
The state tax code permits a government to increase its tax rate to cover a response to a specific disaster—in this case a disaster that caused about $20 million in damages to western Travis County.
