Audit initiated to assess IRS’s compliance with federal requirements for management and security of official and diplomatic government passports, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) released August 31. TIGTA reviewed 133 official and diplomatic passports maintained by the three international travel offices responsible for managing and securing passports. TIGTA identified that controls need to be strengthened for the timely return and tracking of passports used for international travel, disposal of passport and travel records when no longer needed, and security of official passport storage and access.
