The National Treasury Employees Union says many of its members recently learned they will be unexpectedly subject to a temporary payroll tax deferral through the end of this year.
President Donald Trump in August signed a memo authorizing employers to temporarily pause collection of the tax normally taken out of employees’ paychecks to fund Social Security. The administration announced in early September that the deferral is mandatory for eligible federal employees, a move that was criticized by the unions for potentially imposing hardship on workers who will be on the hook to repay the deferred taxes next year.
