President Donald Trump’s budget proposal to cut IRS funding by $1.4 billion is the latest challenge for the resource-constrained agency.

Prior to the start of Trump’s second term, the agency had more than 100,000 workers, as the Biden administration was building it up to increase its efforts to go after tax cheats and modernize IRS technology and customer service. But of the $80 billion the IRS initially received in Democrats’ 2022 tax-and-climate law, only about $10.3 billion remains after the IRS started spending and Republicans succeeded in clawing back much of the funds. ...
