President Donald Trump’s Friday budget request shows he’s sticking with his message that the government is larded with waste, even after a year in which his Department of Government Efficiency lopped off huge chunks of the federal bureaucracy.

But this year, Trump’s quest to rein in government spending is complicated by a wild card: his expanding military ambitions, as reflected in the budget’s 42% hike in defense spending.
