Trump’s IRS Immigration Crime Pivot Could Embolden Tax Cheats

President Donald Trump’s plan to divert IRS agents from a focus on tax enforcement to finding and deporting immigrants might empower more taxpayers to cut corners or outright cheat, former tax officials said.

Trump wants to deputize some IRS law-enforcement officials to help carry out mass deportations and use tax data to find immigrants, among other enforcement shifts.

But straying widely from the mission to investigate tax cases will mean there won’t be warnings of the consequences of not paying. Taxpayers will be more willing to play the audit lottery if they don’t see the repercussions.
