UN Draft Treaty Would Expand Nations’ Rights to Tax Tech Giants

Countries at the United Nations are rewriting the rules of international tax so that they can tax tech giants like Google and Amazon based on where their users are located rather than where they are headquartered.

A draft tax treaty proposal, seen by Bloomberg, that covers advertising, search, social media platforms, online gaming, cloud computing, supply of user data, and more, could significantly increase how much companies pay, and where.

The portion of the draft treaty, referred to by the UN as a protocol and dated May 5, is due to be discussed in New York in August.
