Todd and Julie Chrisley, stars of the USA Network reality television show “Chrisley Knows Best,” were indicted for tax evasion and various other crimes on Aug. 13.
From about 2010 to about 2018, the couple “willfully attempted to evade and defeat” paying income taxes that Todd Chrisley owed for the 2009 tax year, according to the indictment. They concealed income through a business entity holding assets on their behalf and gave IRS employees false information, the grand jury alleged.
The government also indicted Peter Tarantino in the case, describing him as the Chrisleys’ CPA by at least 2015 and alleging he helped prepare the U.S. corporate tax return for 7C’s Productions, which omitted revenue the Chrisley-controlled company generated as well as distributions it paid out with Tarantino’s knowledge.
Todd Chrisley said on Instagram that a former employee was responsible for the indictment. “Not only do we know we’ve done nothing wrong, but we’ve got a ton of hard evidence and a bunch of corroborating witnesses that proves it.”
The government suggested the case reflected a principle of equal justice. “Celebrities face the same justice that everyone does,” said U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak, according to a Department of Justice news release.
The case is U.S. v. Chrisley, N.D. Ga., No. 1:19-cr-297, 8/13/19.
