Vermont lawmakers must repackage a tax bill after Gov. Phil Scott (R) nixed the legislation they sent him to raise property taxes to fund schools and levy new taxes on cloud-based software and short-term rentals.
The Vermont General Assembly passed the so-called yield bill in early May, featuring a proposed average 13.8% property tax hike. Lawmakers have scheduled a June 17 session to address this and other bills Scott has vetoed.
“Vermonters cannot afford a double-digit property tax increase,” especially after an 8% property tax increase last year, Scott said in a statement about his Thursday veto.
