The Virginia Senate voted 21-17 on Thursday to pass legislation that would remove the state’s tax-exempt status from pro-Confederacy groups, sending the bill to Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D).
The bill (HB 167) targets the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, eliminating the tax-exempt designation for real and personal property owned by the group, as well as for the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, the Stonewall Jackson Memorial, the Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the J.E.B. Stuart Birthplace Preservation Trust.
