The IRS faced challenges implementing a web-based system that helps businesses file information returns with the agency, a Treasury Department watchdog found.
The tax agency introduced the Information Return Intake System, or IRIS, in 2023. The system allows businesses to prepare and electronically file 1099 forms, which report different types of income for business owners, contractors, and freelancers, among others.
