The dash to grab subcommittee gavels for senior members of the Ways and Means Committee is in full swing now that Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.) has been elected as the panel’s new chairman.
Two subcommittees don’t have a natural chairman. The death of Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) in a car crash last year left open the top Republican spot on Worker and Family Support. Oversight freed up after ranking member Rep. Tom Rice (R-S.C.), who voted in favor of impeaching former President Donald Trump, lost his primary to Trump-endorsed challenger Rep. Russell Fry (R-S.C.).
