A House GOP proposal to cut $14.3 billion in IRS supplemental modernization funding to support an Israel aid plan would hurt the agency’s ability to audit high-income taxpayers, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel told reporters Tuesday.
“For every $100 million that our budget is reduced, that’s 1,000 exams we don’t do for high-wealth filers,” Werfel said following a meeting with senators on Capitol Hill. “And I think that leaves money on the table. I think this type of cut will, over the course of the Inflation Reduction Act, actually cost taxpayers $90 billion.”
