Congressional Action on Crypto Safeguards Unlikely Until 2025

Substantive legislation addressing regulation of cryptocurrency is unlikely in 2024 but could get traction under a new Congress in 2025, a top lawyer with the Joint Committee on Taxation said Wednesday.

Jeffrey Arbeit, legislation counsel at the joint committee, said there are several proposals addressing digital assets before Congress and lawmakers are generally interested in developing a new statutory framework. Formal action on both comprehensive and small-scale reforms, however, is unlikely in the current climate.
