A multilateral agreement on how to tax big tech companies must happen “this year,” according to a senior European Commission official.
“We need to come to an agreement, and this has to be done this year,” Gerassimos Thomas, the top civil servant in the commission’s tax department, said Thursday. He was speaking at the Tax Foundation conference in Brussels.
He cited the EU’s need for revenue for the urgency. “We need to collect more taxes,” Thomas said, which is why “we have a bit of time pressure.”
