The IRS cautioned taxpayers with pending tax bills to not go to Offer in Compromise “mills” as the sixth item on the 2022 “Dirty Dozen” scams warning list, according to a news release Tuesday.
These services claim they can settle tax debt for pennies on the dollar, but usually obtain the same deal for a fee that taxpayers could have gotten by working directly with the IRS, according to the agency.
The IRS said taxpayers should look out for bigger refund promises and preparers who won’t sign the tax returns they prepare.
