IRS Plans Tough Vetting on Free E-File Pilot, Chief Werfel Says

A free online tax filing pilot run by the IRS will undergo the same security and reliability vetting process the agency uses for other commercial software, top officials said Wednesday.

The electronic pilot, as well as offerings from software companies seeking to participate in the IRS Free File program, are being developed, Chief Taxpayer Experience Officer Ken Corbin told reporters at the Council for Electronic Revenue Communication Advancement Conference. Testing begins toward the end of this month and continues through the end of the year.
