The IRS will look at user feedback and other data to help determine whether it will keep and expand its free online filing pilot or ditch it after its trial run this filing season.
The direct file pilot—which the IRS has emphasized is just another option for taxpayers—will be competing with tax-preparation companies for users. Because the pilot is limited in size, many in the industry want to know how the IRS will measure the program’s success and decide whether or not to continue it.
