Malaysia Extends Social Security Coverage, Plans Rate Increases

Amendments to Malaysia’s Employees’ Social Security Act 1969, published March 5, extend social security coverage to injuries suffered by an employee outside of work and plan contribution rate increases to incorporate the additional coverage.

The Employees’ Social Security (Amendment) Act 2026 defines a “non-employment injury” as a personal injury suffered outside the course of one’s employment. Exceptions are provided for injuries from self-employment and domestic work and for employees suffering “from any condition caused by any disease.”

The Malaysian social security system includes two categories for contributions. The first covers invalidity and injuries while the second category covers only injuries. ...
