Tax Charges Against Ex-Novatek CFO Reversed as Time-Barred

The Eleventh Circuit negated several charges against former Russian energy executive Mark Anthony Gyetvay after determining the government acted too late to pursue him.

In a mixed ruling, the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit reversed, remanded, and vacated two charges for failure to file tax returns against Gyetvay, the former chief financial officer of Russian natural gas company Novatek. The court also vacated an order that required he pay $4 million in restitution to the IRS and directed the district court to reconsider it given the opinion.
