Trump Tests Congress’ Willingness to Protect Its Own Watchdogs

President Donald Trump is upping his ire of congressional watchdog agencies.

Long critical of the oversight agencies, Trump has moved in recent weeks to take control and weaken their vaunted independence. He’s fired the head of the Library of Congress, which oversees the Congressional Research Service, and attempted to install a cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency team at the Government Accountability Office. It’s the latest example of Trump’s clashing with Congress over its role as co-equal branch and poses a fresh test of how far Republicans will go in ceding power to the president.
