Brazil Allows Companies To Rehire Dismissed Workers within 90 Days

The Brazilian government July 14 continued its new coronavirus relief efforts for businesses by issuing an order allowing companies to rehire dismissed workers within 90 days after their dismissal.

The ministerial order (Order No. 16,655, Portuguese) authorizes the rehire of dismissed workers, something ordinarily prohibited and considered fraudulent.

Under the order, companies may also rehire employees at reduced salaries with the approval of a union. These measures were made retroactive to March 20 and are to remain in effect until the government’s national emergency act expires at the end of the year.
