The 2019 California withholding tables for Method B exact calculations and instructions were released Nov. 1 by the Employment Development Department.
The 2019 annual standard deduction amount for withholding purposes is $4,401, up from $4,236 in 2018.
For married employees with employed spouses, the department included a special note. “To avoid underwithholding of state income tax liability we recommend that you use one of the following options: Single filing status to compute withholding amounts for the employee and spouse; or withhold an additional flat amount of tax,” the advisory said.
