California Releases 2020 Withholding Certificate

The 2020 version of California’s withholding certificate was released Jan. 27 by the state’s Employment Development Department.

The updated Form DE 4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, may be used to claim exemption from California withholding. Previously, employees used the federal Form W-4 to claim exemption from both federal and state withholding. The state retained the Feb. 15 deadline for employees to submit a new form to claim exemption from withholding each year.
