Chicago Ordinance Expands Paid Leave Law Beyond Sick Leave

Chicago, Illinois, replaced its paid sick leave law with one that also provides general paid leave to covered employees, under an ordinance that will go into effect on Dec. 31, 2023.

All employers are covered under Substitute Ordinance 2023-0002980. Employees are covered by the ordinance if they work at least two hours in the city within any two-week period. If they are compensated for time spent on business-related travel in the city, travel time in Chicago is considered work covered by the ordinance. Additionally, all domestic workers are covered under the ordinance, regardless of their worker classification.
