Chile has granted new rights to remote workers as hundreds of thousands get used to working from home because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The legislation (Spanish), signed into law March 24 by President Sebastián Piñera, requires employers to reach agreement with workers who work remotely on their working conditions, adding an appendix to their existing labor contract. In a first for Latin America, the law recognizes workers’ right to disconnect, which prohibits employers from communicating with employees for at least 12 continuous hours during each 24-hour period or during holiday time.
