Colorado will begin paying overdue wage claims to employees starting on April 1, 2024, but employers will have to reimburse the state, under a bill Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed April 17.
SB 23-231 allows the state to use its wage theft enforcement fund to pay employees who have been owed wages from their employers for at least six months. The six-month period begins on the date the Colorado Labor and Employment Department sends a notice of assessment to an employer or, if the employer requests a hearing, the date a hearing officer issues a decision.
