EU Agreement Addresses Social Security for Cross-Border Workers

A European Union framework agreement that took effect July 1 in signing countries addresses social security coverage for cross-border workers who also work remotely.

Under the agreement, cross-border workers can request, with the employer’s consent, to be covered by their work country’s social security system when they spend less than 50% of their working time working remotely from their country of residence. To benefit, the worker must both live and their employer must have a registered office in countries that signed the agreement. The agreement also has an explanatory memorandum.
