Germany to Increase Minimum Wage in Two Stages to $14 as of 2025

German Labor Minister Hubertus Heil said the government will implement a recommendation for a two-stage increase in the minimum wage published Monday by an independent commission.

  • The commission recommended that the gross minimum wage should rise to €12.41 ($13.55) an hour at the beginning of next year from €12 now and to €12.82 ($14) at the start of 2025
  • Stefan Koerzell, a board member from Germany’s DGB labor federation who sits on the commission, said the proposal represents “an enormous loss of real wages” for nearly six million workers
