Hawaii employees may be eligible for unpaid leave if their child, spouse, partner, sibling, grandchild, or parent is called to active duty service in the US Armed Forces, under a bill effective July 1.
Hawaii’s family leave law provides up to four weeks of unpaid leave each year to employees for certain circumstances, such as caring for someone with a serious health condition or child adoption or birth. Act 13 expands coverage of the law to provide leave for qualifying military exigencies, which are responsibilities that arise when a family member is deployed or called to active duty.
