Hawaii increased the monthly compensation amount for exemption from its wage-hour laws to $4,000 from $2,000, under a bill that went into effect on June 21.
To be exempt from Hawaii’s minimum wage and overtime laws, an employee must be guaranteed at least $4,000 in monthly compensation, under Act 73.
The intention of Act 73 is to strengthen Hawaii’s wage-hour laws for employees, according to a legislative committee report. For instance, an employee earning Hawaii’s minimum wage of $14 in 2024 would already receive over $2,000 a month if they work a standard 40-hour workweek.
