Iowa Unemployment-Taxable Wage Base Rising to $39,500 in 2025

Iowa’s unemployment-taxable wage base will be $39,500 for 2025, up from $38,200 for 2024, the Iowa Workforce Development announced in a July 5 press release.

The unemployment-taxable wage base limits the amount of employee wages that employers are taxed on. In 2024, for example, employers do not have to pay unemployment tax on an employee’s wages that exceed $38,200.

Iowa annually calculates its unemployment-taxable wage as two-thirds of the state’s average weekly wage for the previous calendar year, under state law. The average weekly wage for 2023 was $1,137.20, according to the press release.
