IRS Sets 2027 Target Date to Retire Old E-File Return Portal

The Internal Revenue Service intends to retire its Filing Information Returns Electronically portal in calendar year 2027, an official said June 5.

The FIRE portal will continue to operate for tax year 2025, and most filings for the year will be submitted in calendar year 2026, the IRS’s Billie Crawford said during the agency’s monthly payroll industry teleconference. Starting with tax year 2026, however, employers will likely not be able to file information returns through FIRE, since filings for tax year 2026 will occur in calendar year 2027.
