A Pittsburgh home health-care company will pay workers $1.6 million back wages and penalties after the U.S. Labor Department determined they’re employees who were misclassified as independent contractors.
A federal judge approved the settlement in a consent order publicized Wednesday by DOL. It requires Christian Home Healthcare to pay 546 home-health aides more than $800,000 in unpaid overtime wages for hours beyond 40 in a week and an equal amount in liquidated damages. The employer wrongly labeled the employees as independent contractors exempted from wage law, the department said.
