Maine Civil Emergency Triggers Hazard Pay in Portland

The hourly minimum pay rate in Portland, Maine, is $22.50 for nontipped employees and $11.25 for tipped employees during the civil emergency that was declared Jan. 11, according to a news release from the city.

Portland’s minimum wage law requires employers to pay employees hazard pay instead of the local minimum wage during states of emergency.

Gov. Janet Mills (D) declared a state of civil emergency on Jan. 11 in eight coastal counties, including Portland’s Cumberland County, due to severe winter storms and flooding.
