Maine eliminated the subminimum wage that was paid to some workers with disabilities under a bill signed by Gov. Janet Mills (D).
The measure (LD 1874), which was signed March 18, is to take effect June 16, 2020, the state said April 6 in a news release.
Under the law, employers many no longer pay less than the minimum wage to those with a mental or physical disability. A special certificate that authorized the subminimum wage for employers becomes invalid after the law takes effect.
