Maine’s Minimum Wage Expected to Rise 15 Cents in 2021

Sept. 14, 2020, 8:53 PM UTC

Maine’s hourly minimum wage is expected to rise to $12.15 from $12, effective Jan. 1, Bloomberg Tax calculations showed.

The calculations were based on statutory requirements and federal Bureau of Labor Statistics data issued Sept. 11.

The minimum direct service wage for tipped workers and the maximum tip credit in 2021 are expected to equal $6.075, which is half of the minimum wage. These amounts were $6 in 2020.

Starting Jan. 1, the state’s hourly minimum wage is annually reviewed for inflation-related adjustments based on the relevant consumer price index for the Northeast Region and rounded to the nearest 5 cents.

The subminimum wage that could be paid to those with mental or physical disabilities was eliminated in June under a measure (LD 1874) that was signed March 18 by Gov. Janet Mills (D) and took effect June 16.
