Manitoba Adds Public Holiday

Canada’s province of Manitoba added the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a public holiday starting in 2024 through amendments to the province’s Employment Standards Code that received assent Dec. 7.

The Employment Standards Code Amendment and Interpretation Amendment Act (Orange Shirt Day) adds the holiday, which is on Sept. 30. Unlike other Manitoba public holidays, the act also prevents employers from substituting the holiday with another day off, which can ordinarily be done through a collective bargaining agreement, the approval of a union, or the approval of a majority of employees in writing.
