Massachusetts is to require new employees and current employees who wish to change their withholding to use its state withholding certificate starting in 2020, the state revenue department said Dec. 19.
Effective Jan. 1, 2020, new employees must fill out both the federal Form W-4 and Form M-4, Massachusetts Employee’s Withholding Exemption Certificate, the department said in an email newsletter.
Current employees do not need to fill out Form M-4 unless they wish to change their withholding, the department said.
