An updated version of New Jersey’s withholding guide was released Dec. 19 by the state taxation division.
The state is to require employees to fill out the state withholding certificate, Form NJ-W4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, the division said in the guide. While employers were already required to give the form to employees, if it was not returned employers could use the number of allowances claimed on the federal Form W-4 to calculate state withholding.
Additionally, employers must file the annual reconciliation, Form NJ-W-3, Reconciliation of Tax Withheld, and Forms W-2 and 1099 electronically starting with tax year 2020 ...
